Basement Fire!

by Woodrow Walden

Yesterday we had a fire in our basement apartment.  The cause was an oil fire when our tenant left a pot of boiling oil unattended for a couple of minutes.  By the time I was able to get down there the flames had engulfed the stove, the range-hood and were climbing the wall and ceiling.  I was able to cover the pot with a sweatshirt which then burst into flames, but cover the oil enough that I was able to put the fire out with our garden hose.  Not necessarily the best move, but it was successful.  The fire department did arrive moments after I was able to get it out and smoke had filled the basement unit.  It was quite possibly the scariest thing I have ever had to experience but if I hadn’t acted right then, I fully believe that the fire would have reach an even great stage and more damage would have occurred.  Needless to say, it was traumatic for our tenant and ourselves, but in the end the most important thing is that no one was seriously injured.

Here are some photos of the aftermath.
